Barlow, Clutter chosen as top seniors
Seniors
Joe Barlow and Lindsay Clutter were named outstanding boy and girl
for the class of 2006. They were selected by the faculty and their
peers and received formal notification of their honors at the annual
Honors Night program held May 23.
As
part of the award, both seniors served as emcees of the 91st commencement
ceremonies for the class of 2006 on June 1. |
Lonergan
earns full volleyball scholarship to LSU
Maggie
Lonergan has received a full athletic scholarship to Louisiana State
University, where she will play volleyball for the Tigers this fall
(click
here to read more). A formal signing ceremony was held May 23
with LSU officials.
She
is a two-time first-team All-Conference and All-Area and earned first-team
All-Lake County honors in 2005. In addition, she was selected to participate
in the inaugural Lake County All-Star Tournament and was the Coaches
Award Player of the Year. |
51 students recognized at May breakfast
Fifty-one
students were recognized for a variety of contributions and achievements
in school at the final You Make A Difference breakfast held May 25
in the cafeteria.

Thirteen teams qualify for IHSA All-Academic Team award
Thirteen
varsity athletic teams qualified for the
Illinois High School Association’s Team Academic Achievement
Award for the 2005-2006 school year. In order to qualify for this
award, teams needed to maintain a 3.0 overall grade point average.
The teams that qualified included boys' golf, girls' volleyball, girls'
tennis, girls' cross country, boys' basketball, girls' basketball,
bowling, gymnastics, softball, girls' soccer, boy' track, girls' track
and boys' tennis.
“Antioch
is proud of the efforts that our athletes have put forward in the
classroom. A team achieving a 3.0 over-all grade point average results
from all team members putting a strong effort into their academic
endeavors,” athletic director Steve Schoenfelder said. “For
the past three years, 70 percent of our varsity teams have achieved
this award.” |
Morway
selected for all-state honors in girls’ soccer
Senior Kelsie Morway was selected to the Illinois
High School Soccer Coaches Association All-State Team this spring,
as well as the Chicago Tribune’s All-State Honorable Mention
Team. She was a four-time all-conference selection, four-time Daily
Herald Team selection and four-time Niles North Tournament Team selection.
In addition, she was a Crystal Lake Central Tournament team selection.
A two-time team MVP, she is the career leader in goals with 72. She
is the first Sequoit girls’ soccer player named to an all-state
team since 1992. |
Fay,
Lichter earn advanced degrees
Two
ACHS administrators completed their doctorate degrees this spring.
Dr. Phyllis Fay earned her Ed.D. from National-Lewis
University in Educational Leadership. She serves ACHS as assistant
principal for pupil personnel service.
Dr.
Sue Lichter earned a Ph.D. from National-Lewis
University, also in Educational Leadership. She is currently ACHS’
special education coordinator. |
  Daily
Herald honors seniors
Senior
Chandler Kent was selected to the Daily Herald Academic Team, which
recognizes academic excellence. Kent played on the boys’ basketball
and baseball teams and ranked in the top one percent of his class.
Seniors
Maggie Bodanyi and Lindsay Clutter were named honorable mention to
the Daily Herald Leadership Team program. The award recognizes high
school students who excel in volunteerism and community service.
Bodanyi
was active in the National Honor Society and student council, as well
as serving as sports editor for the school newspaper. Clutter was
also a member of NHS along with playing on the girls’ tennis
and soccer teams. |
Tech
campus students shine in competitions
Andrew
Arendas qualified at regional contests for the national SkillsUSA
composition in Kansas City, Missouri June 21 in Related Technical
Math (CAD). Jillian Pish, Chris Neiman-Swindell and Andrew Arendas
placed first at state competition in the quiz bowl category. Other
students who qualified for state completion were Jillian Pish (Computer
Aided Drafting and Promotional Bulletin Board), Andy Birdsall (Firefighting),
William Blake and Chris Swindell (Promotional Bulletin Board).
Lake
County High Schools Technology Campus also announced that the
following ACHS students have been named Program Students of the Year:
Kevin DeKind (Building Trades), Jillian Pish (Computer Aided Drafting),
Christina Persinger (Early Childhood Education), Gregory Luther (Welding
Fabrication) and Steve Morgan (Welding Fabrication). |
Choir
students recognized for top performances
Kevin
Budd was selected to the Illinois
Music Educators Association (IMEA) All-State Honors Chorus. This
qualified him to sing at the IMEA state convention in Peoria, Illinois
in January. In addition, Izabel Zambrzyki was named as an IMEA District
7 Instrumentalist.
Kevin Budd, Hannah Hagert and Jillian Houtz were selected to the Midwest
Regional High School Honors Choir for the American
Choral Directors Association (ACDA). They sang at the convention
in Chicago in February. |
Art
students receive awards at conference & local festivals
Ten
ACHS students earned blue ribbons for their pieces shown at the North
Suburban Conference Art Festival held at Round Lake High School: Sara
Voigt, Mike Nyre, Collin Clarke, Megan McCarthy, Courtney Cimaglio,
Ryan O’Connor, Mike Nagel, Jennifer Edwards, Lisa Freeman and
Renee Taylor.
At
the 19th annual Antioch Women’s Club art show, five students
received first place awards: Mike Nagel, Bethany Ginter, Jenny Jadrich,
Courntey Cimaglio and Kelly Harris.
In
February Jessica Chelmecki and Sarah Jones were named finalists in
the Lake County Discover
Museum’s Anime Contest. The contest was part of the museum’s
six-month exhibit titled Anime-zing:
The World of Japanese Animation. |
National
Merit Special Scholarship to Helgeson
Senior
Simon Helgeson has been selected as the winner of a Special Scholarship
as the result of his high performance in the National
Merit Program. He will receive an award sponsored by Tyco Healthcare.
Special
Scholarships are underwritten by business organizations that also
provide scholarships in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Winners
of Special Scholarships are chosen on the basis of their skills and
accomplishments from a pool of candidates who fulfilled the sponsor's
criteria and scored high on the 2004 PSAT/NMSQT.
An
Eagle Scout and member of the National Honor Society, math team and
band, Helgeson plans to study environmental issues in college. |
Scheidt
named National Merit Scholarship Finalist
Senior
Hannah Scheidt has been selected as a Finalist in the National
Merit Scholarship Program. She is one of 15,000 students chosen
from the 1.3 million who entered the program and scored among the
highest in Illinois on the PSAT test.
Finalists
are eligible for Merit Scholarship awards in the amount of $2,500,
which will be announced beginning in March. Abilities, skills and
accomplishments are among the criteria used to determine the 8,200
awards to be given out. Academic records, information about the school's
curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, school official's
written recommendation, information about the student's activities
and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay are all part of the evaluation. |
Two
alumni added to athletic hall of fame Two
former student-athletes were added to the ACHS athletic hall of fame
at halftime of the Feb. 3 boys’ basketball game vs. Lakes.
Mike
Perrone, a 1975 graduate, received all-conference, all-area, and all-state
recognition in both basketball and baseball, including team MVP. He
served as president of Antioch Youth Baseball and continues to coach
youth sports.
Laura
Hedien, a 1983 graduate, was a two-time state track and field qualifier
in the discus. Her 1983 basketball team won the regional championship.
She played both sports on scholarship at Bradley University, winning
the Gateway Conference javelin championship in 1987. Hedien is a lieutenant
with the Waukegan Fire Department. |
