Elliott wins Human Services and Civil Rights Award
Special Education teacher Kerri Elliott has won the 2010 IEA-NEA Human Services and Civil Rights Award. She will be presented this award at the Illinois Education Association State Convention in Rosemont, Illinois at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare Hotel on Friday, March 19.
Elliott's work with the people in the Tanzania village of Kilimahewa during her volunteer stint in 2008 has resulted in school supplies and textbooks for the village's children. Elliott led a drive to fill backpacks with 70 items each for schoolchildren. Later she coordinated "Prom On A Dime," which raised $1,500 to buy textbooks. Elliott returned to Kilimahewa in 2009 to purchase and deliver the books.
She continues to give presentations about the needs of the people in Tanzania and is currently raising money to hire teachers and build a well to supply drinking water to the village. Approximately $2,000 of the $8,000 needed for the well has already been collected. In addition, she helped create a support group for parents of autistic children, a service unavailable in most parts of the country. |
Gwinn honored as Illinois Spirit Coach of the Year
The National Federation of State High School Association’s Spirit Association has named ACHS head cheerleading coach Robin Gwinn as the Illinois Spirit Coach of the Year. Gwinn has been the head cheer coach for the past 11 seasons. In the five years the IHSA has hosted a state cheer competition, Antioch has won three sectional championships and finished no lower than eighth in the state standings, including a second place finish in 2006.
“As a school and as a department, we are extremely excited about Robin’s recognition," said athletic director Steve Schoenfelder. "She has been involved with the ACHS cheerleading program since the late 1970s as a student/athlete, assistant coach and head coach. Her team’s accomplishments speak for them self, but she would be the first to tell you the hard work of the athletes and the support of the parents are what allows for these successes. She is committed to the advancement of the sport and in addition to her coaching responsibilities also serves as a judge at many competitions around the state. We are fortunate to have her as our head coach.” |
