Idzerda wins award for one-of-a-kind outfit
click to enlargeRecent graduate Meryl Idzerda has received the American Sewing Guild’s Rising Star Award. The Guild, sponsored Simplicity Pattern Company, selected Idzerda’s imitation of a Dennis Basso jacket as the winner of its national Creativity Contest.
Contest participants had to design a “one-a-kind” outfit from one or more of nine Simplicity patterns. Entries were judged on their “overall appearance and fashion point of view; creative effort; selections/combinations appropriate to design; and quality of construction and general workmanship.”
Idzerda’s jacket, which had previously been recognized by the Illinois Family Career and Community Leaders of America at its state competition, originally was Idzerda’s project from teacher Laureen Carl’s Apparel Design and Construction class. Carl said that the jacket’s trim, made of tulle and lace, and the decorative stitching made the garment exceptional.
As the contest winner Idzerda will receive $500, a Babyloc sewing machine and year’s membership in the Guild. The jacket will also be featured on the Guild’s website and in a future issue of Notions.
Idzerda plans on majoring in costume design at Harper College.
